Please go to: http://www.megaconferencejr.org and review the posted schedule and presentations prior to completing your registration. Again this year you have the ability to interact live with one of the scheduled presentations. Once you have read the schedule and know which session you would like to interact with, go to the "register" link and complete the form. You will be asked to make your selection towards the end of the registration form. When you have completed all fields click the "Submit" button. You should then receive an email confirmation.

The interactive registrations with presenters are on a first come first serve basis. Once we have three for each presentation, interactive registration will be closed.

NOTE: If you already registered and would like to sign up to be an ineractive for another presentation (or if you are presenting and would like to update your title or abstract) you can do so by using the email and password you used to register originally to log back in and select your interactive session (or update your presentation information). Don't forget to click "submit" when done. If you have experience any difficulty in signing up for an interactive seat, please let us know.

Dear Megaconference Jr. 2008 Presenters, Interactives, Participants, VJs, Viewers, and Sponsors,

Thank you so much for participating in the February 21, 2008 Megaconference Jr. event! It was just fantastic thanks to the wonderful presentations and discussions and interactions among you all around the world. We know how much work you all put into the event and it sure showed!

We hope that you have gotten some ideas for new collaborations and projects and met some new "friends" around the world who you can continue to interact with long after the Megaconference. To help you in doing this, we encourage you to use this Megaconference Jr. blog to post your collaboration requests or comment on the event or just find each other to continue the discussions started a few weeks ago.

If you were not aware of it, many prizes were given out throughout the day (and this year you did NOT have to be present to win) so be sure to check out the prizes page and if your school is on there as a prize winner but you haven't heard from the Sponsor yet as to how to claim your prize, be sure to let us know. We do want to give a final thanks to our very generous sponsors including Royal Botanical Gardens, Center for Puppetry Arts, Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration, COSI Columbus, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Cleveland Institute of Music, Mote Marine Laboratory, Vu Ports, Tandberg, and Polycom.

WHAT IS MEGACONFERENCE JR.?
Megaconference Jr., now in its fifth year, is a project designed to give students in elementary and secondary schools around the world the opportunity to communicate, collaborate and contribute to each other's learning in real time, using advanced multi-point video conferencing technology. Presenters design and conduct videoconference-based presentations and activities focused on both academic and cultural issues. Participants are able to address questions to presenters and to collaborate with geographically diverse peers in collaborative learning activities, thus building international cultural awareness.

As we celebrate our fifth anniversary we would like to thank everyone for making this such a successful event. We have exceeded all of our initial goals and objectives. We have made connections, built collaborations and begun to understand our cultural differences and similarities. With our new understandings we hope to continue to build respect for our differences and a willingness to work together to find answers and solutions to the questions of our times. We encourage you to look at your community, region or nation and identify issues that not only affect you but others around the world. As global citizens, can we begin talking and working together to make positive changes in the world? As you begin planning your presentations and proposals for this year you might want to think of these ideas and how we can make this 5 Year Anniversary Megaconference Jr. event even better by further addressing these global questions and concerns that face us all. Of course, we always welcome presentations dealing with cultural exchanges, music/art/video exchanges and projects or innovative classroom practices.

WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE?
The event will be on February 21, 2008, and it will run from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm EST (UTC-5). The 12-hour duration will make it possible for schools from many time zones to participate during their regular school hours. We strongly encourage schools to open up participation to parents, administrators, and the community and to stay connected for as long as possible so that they can actively participate with sites from around the world in different time-zones. Museums and libraries are especially encouraged to invite children, library patrons, and the community at large to participate during non-school hours.

HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE?

HOW WILL PROPOSALS BE EVALUATED?
Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:
1. Title: The title is catchy and unique and related to the objective of the presentation.
2. Presentation is Related to Theme: Student presentations should focus on academic or cultural issues and incorporate global awareness and collaboration.
3. Collaboration/Interactivity: The ideal presentation should include collaboration with students in another geographic location. If your project includes another site please identify that in the "Overview" section of the proposal submission form.
4. Creativity/Uniqueness: The presentation is delivered in a creative way and presents a different or unique topic.
5. Multimedia: Without distracting from the proposal objectives, the students use a variety of media resources and appropriate distance learning activites.

WHAT TECHNOLOGY DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE?
Most sites will need Internet2 or comparable high-speed connection and access to H.323 video-conferencing equipment. Presentations must be made using H.323 technology, preferably at 768 Kbps, and they will be made from the presenter's location. Presentations with multiple remote presenters are encouraged (see evaluation criteria above).

WOULD I BE ABLE TO REHEARSE?
Yes, all presenters will be required to hold at least one dress rehearsal, preferably with their interactive sites, prior to the event to rehearse and refine their presentations.

HOW TO REGISTER AND SUBMIT A PROPOSAL:

The NEW date for Megaconference Jr. 2008 has been set for February 21, 2008, and planning committees need your help to make the 5th Anniversary Megaconference Jr. event even more of a success than the previous four years' events. This year there will also be several new additions to the event which will give participants the opportunity for even more interaction leading up to the event itself. New this year will be a Virtual Battle of the Bands where musical groups will audition to be part of the grand finale based on the highest number of votes from the international community.

Elementary and secondary (K-12) teachers and students from around the world are needed now to work on the five planning committees listed below. Participation in a committee will provide the opportunity to engage in regular virtual communications with international team members towards organizing and completing committee goals.

Volunteers are needed in several areas. Please distribute this call for participation widely in your communities.

Technical Committee
• Develop and disseminate technical participation requirements
• Determine possible number of participating sites per timeframe and types of connections
• Assemble and distribute technical troubleshooting guidelines
• Coordinate video streaming and archiving of the event
• Coordinate network testing and troubleshooting
• Conduct technical tests with registered sites around the world
• Coordinate chat room(s) for technical support

The event was a tremendous success and we are grateful to all the presenters, interactives, participants, VJs, and technical staff who helped make this the most successful Megaconference Jr. to date.

Connecting Instructions for rehearsals and the big day

Important info on how to connect for rehearsals and the big MegaJr. event:

There are four distinct roles for registrants of Megaconference Junior. There are presenters, VJs, interactives, and participants. You should know what your role is. (If you did not sign up to be an interactive participant for another presentation when you registered, then you are considerd a participant.)

For VJs and presenters, you should have already signed up for a rehearsal using the form.

What to do duing your rehearsal:
-- At the appointed time, you will be dialed in directly by the presenters MCU.
-- Once connected, you may begin your dress rehearsal.

What to do on the day of the event:
--We will dial you directly using the IP we had for rehearsals.
-- You can stay connected all day on the presenters MCU. If you get disconnected, we will bring you back in.

(Note, presenters are encouraged to contact their interactives to arrange for a joint rehearsal if this can be arranged.)

For participants and interactives, there are only two remaining open testing times:
--Thursday, Feb 15 from 7 AM to 11 AM EST
--Tuesday, Feb 20 from 1 PM to 5 PM EST

(Note, interactives are encouraged to also rehearse with presenters if this can be arranged.)

What to do during open testing:
--Connect using the connection information that your MCU Manager has provided (see below if you don't have this info yet)
--Wait for a quiet moment to announce yourself by saying " is connected."
--You will be acknowledged by a member of the technical committee
--You will be asked to sign up for a roll call

What do do during the 2/22 event:
-- Connect using the information you used for your test.
-- If you get disconnected, you must dial back in to your assigned MCU.

** If you are a presenter who also is an interactive, you will be dialed directly by the presenters MCU for the entire day.

If you do not have connection information for the day of Megaconference Junior, please follow these steps:
1. Go to http://www.megaconferencejr.org and click on 2007 Participants
2. Find your school or organization on this list
3. Get the abbreviation for the MCU to which you are assigned in the far right hand column
4. Find that abbreviation on the MCU managers page and white list the contact info if you have a spam filter
5. Send an email to that contact to request connection information. BE SURE TO INCLUDE: your email, your telephone, and any alternate contact information you have.

VJs aren't just for MTV

Hello everyone,

You’ve seen VJs on MTV but have you ever seen the MegaJr. VJs? Want to be one? We at MegaJr. Headquarters are looking for seven international VJ teams to host the Megaconference Jr. Event.

What exactly is a VJ?
A VJ is a video jockey or “announcer” or “host” that appears live over a 2 hour block during the Megaconference Jr. on February 22nd, 2007. Most schools recruit 2-4 VJs to represent their country, state and/or school. Over the last 2 years, we’ve had VJ teams from the United Kingdom, Hawaii, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Taiwan and Canada.

What are the responsibilities of a VJ Team?
Before the MegaJr. Event, the VJs communicate via email and a blogging site. There are subcommittees within the VJ team that work on the following: designing a logo for VJ t-shirts, fundraising for purchasing the t-shirts, building a VJ webpage, working on the VJ set design and writing scripts to introduce the Megaconference Jr. interactions.

Is it cool to be a VJ?
Yes, it’s cool. Past VJs have considered it a privilege to introduce student interactions from all over the world.

How do I sign up?
First of all, send a paragraph of intent to the overall VJ producer Kathy Kraemer. She can be reached at: kraemer@ties.k12.mn.us In addition to your paragraph, please include the following information:

1 School name
2 School address
3 School phone number
4 Teacher contact (phone and email)
5 Student VJ names and email addresses
6 IP Address
7 Technical name and contact
8 Phone number in the room where you will be VJing

What do we do after we send the paragraph of intent and a complete listing of our contact information?
Glad you asked. You’ll be called to do a VJ audition. A complete step-by-step guide for the videoconference audition will be sent to you via email along with a schedule of audition times.

What do we say during our auditions?
Below is a script below that you’ll use for your auditions. Feel free to be creative and have some fun with the script. You can also be creative with the set where your audition will be held.

Welcome to Megaconference Junior. My name is ___________ and I’ll like to introduce my co-VJs________________, ______________ and ____________. Our next interaction comes from Memphis, Tennessee and Barcelona, Spain. You’ll meet juniors and seniors from each school as they present and discuss the origins of blues, gospel and flamenco music. Take it away Memphis and Barcelona...

The Megaconference Jr. Management team is considering a new date and time of year for Megaconference Jr. 2007. The new proposed date is Feb. 22, 2007. Please post your comments as to whether this new timeframe works for your school/organization. The goal is to have the event earlier in the school year to allow for more opportunities for collaboration with new contacts made through Megaconference Jr. throughout the school year. The recent Megaconference Jr. 2006 event was wildly successful. We thank all of the presenters, interactives, participants, VJs, and sponors for making the day a truly educational and engaging event for all involved. If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to fill out the 2006 survey to help make next year's event even more wonderful.
